As the lightning stuck and the booming of the thunder rolled throughout the house I couldn’t help but to awake from my deep sleep. There was a big storm rolling in and was supposed to be here for a couple of days and if it was going to be waking me up every time I heard the roaring of the thunder I knew I would have had to try and find some way to get some type of sleep during the duration of the storm. I tried to roll over and ignore the increasing sounds but there was nothing I could do to drown them out and attempt to get myself any resemblance of a good night’s rest. I rolled over at the illuminated clock sitting on my bedside table and noticed how early in the morning it was, 1:25a.m. and I was not sure if I was going to be able to go back to sleep considering the storm was just starting to creep over the mountains. Considering it was a Saturday morning and with nothing planned throughout the day, I figured that waking up at this time wouldn’t do any harm to my health. I rolled out of bed and stuffed my feet into my slippers and stood up, and just as I was about to reach over and grab my t-shirt another bolt of lightning struck and knocked out the power. Great.
Now I just have to find my flashlight which is not going to be an easy task since I have not seen my flashlight since before I moved into my new house. I do remember saying I need this for when I have any type of emergency at night, but during the unorganized packing of the old house I am unsure of what box I put it in, or where I might have even put the box. I first moved in a couple of months ago and I have been “unpacking” since then. I have some of the boxes located in ground floor of the house, some are collecting dust in the basement and a majority of them are sitting neatly in my garage labeled where they are supposed to go, but in order to find out which box the flashlight is in I need a flashlight, talk about irony. I put on my shirt, was probably backwards since I was getting dressed in the middle of the night and pitch black, and started to feel my way around to find something I could use as a temporary light. I grabbed my cell phone and thumbed through it looking for the camera setting so I could use the light and hopefully it would suffice and help me find the box with the flashlight. I get to the camera setting and by a stroke of my type of luck the battery starts to die and it tells me it’s about to power down. Strike number two for me having somewhat of a good weekend. I continue thinking and searching for something that would give me ample enough light to use that way I can search for the flashlight and be able to do things normally and hopefully this does not last a long time because it could only end badly for me in some way.
I stumbled out into the hallway which leads to my bedroom and pass the bathroom, and since I was sleeping it is only logical for me to need to relieve myself, so I made a pit stop and gave myself a chance to think of anything I could have in my house to give me some sort of light. As I finish up and flush the toilet my mind remains blank on what I could possibly use to illuminate my way towards the basement. Just then as a bolt of lightning flashed a though popped into my head, as if the lightning bolt energized my thought process. When the lighting flashes it lights up the whole house, or at least the areas with windows in them, and luckily the house I now own runs plentiful with them. I have put up some curtains in the ground level of the house but while upstairs the light almost suffices for having a light bulb turn on for a brief second which gives me enough light and time to take a couple of steps and then just turns off. I start to make my way towards the stairs and not exactly knowing how many stairs I have I wait for the lightning to help me illuminate my way down so I do not injure myself walking down the stairs. Every lighting strike I take a couple of steps and wait eagerly for the next one. After about I would guessed it to be a half an hour I was finally down stairs and the bad thing was I had put up dark curtains so no light would come in, seems I had to face my biggest challenge yet.
As the lightning stuck I waited for the light to hopefully shine through the dark curtains, but my patients in waiting was in vain. I stood there for a moment pondering what my next course of action would be and as I came to a decision a knock came at the door. Unsure of what time it was but knowing that I had awakened around 1:30a.m. I had no clue as to who could be knocking at my door. The stranger knocked again almost in sync with the roaring of the thunder. I was hesitant to go see who it was since I was new to the neighborhood and I wouldn’t even know who it would be even if I had the courage to open the door. The knocking continued but it was growing louder and more frequent as if the individual on the other side was growing impatient but determined to get in. In the back of my mind I start to contemplate the possibilities of who might be at my door at this time of the night and in a horrible rain storm. Was it someone from the power company? Was it someone stranded in the street just looking to find a dry place till morning? Could it be a drunken neighbor who has the wrong address just thinking that it is his house? After the endless possibilities that ran through my head of who could be pounding at my door at this time I decided I would let my curiosity take over and open the door for whoever needed my help.
